Mathematics! Boring?? Important in life??

Often times students find mathematics boring and uninteresting, but why is this so? Are teachers not doing enough to make students gravitate toward the subject? Or are students so brainwashed by predecessors that they fear the subject without much exposure to it?  Will an increase in the integration of technology in the classroom make the students more interested in the subject area? Well, research has shown that students will learn better because of the technologically advanced age we are living in.

  Teachers need to spend the time to develop their skills of teaching mathematics in a variety of ways; this will draw the students interest.  Mathematics teachers need to develop Pedagogical Content Knowledge skills. These are skills which enables a teacher to use the knowledge he or she has and diversify in such a way that the topic or concept appeals to all if not most learners.   As Gagne said in his publications for the learning process to start the attention of the students must be grabbed , only then can the teacher go on with the lesson.

Mathematics teachers should desire to see their students use what they have learnt in the mathematics classroom outside of the classroom.  First, they have to connect the different mathematical concepts to real life situations.  Make the maths of more meaning to the student and they will understand and appreciate it more. If students see the need for mathematics in their world then they would want to know it. For example:  binary operations is very important in the whole function of the computer, if students know this then maybe wouldn't mind doing base. Matrices helps in the making of stoplights, the basic shapes learnt in geometry is what the computer manipulates to give us those pretty little things we like to see on them.
Teachers have to help students to link mathematical concepts with each other. Linking these concepts will keep on reinforcing  what was done before and better understanding will develop.

 Often times we find that students like the subject they are good at, and students are good at the subjects they like.  Teachers have to work on students confidence, that they can achieve in this subject area.  Nothing good in life comes easy-that's  how we know mathematics is a good subject.

Mathematics encompasses so much, so lets work at using all the technology we have to bring it across well.
